cork harvest :
Portugal is the leading producer of cork oak. Protected for centuries in Portugal by a law which prohibits illegal slaughter, the cork oak is an ancestral tree and very generous because its bark is renewed over the years. There is no need to cut the three to obtain cork. The bark is extracted from cork oak every 9 to 10 years. The bark of the cork tree regenerates throughout its life, on average 170 years. As a result, cork is a natural, renewable and biodegradable resource on an exceptional basis.
It is at the end of spring and summer that the cork can be removed from the tree in the damage. After extraction, a new layer is formed.
The rural population of the region is organized into teams of “corcheros”. Their work is not mechanized, it is manual, which requires great skill and precision to avoid damage to the shaft.
Once the bark is recovered, it stays outside for several months to allow the cork to lose its moisture and its composition becomes more homogeneous (its cells will stabilize). Then, the bark is cooked in water for an hour, and thus take a board shape. Cooking also serves to remove impurities, improve its elasticity and increase its volume.
