BABY ABAG

cactus

At their fully organic ranch they select and cut only the mature leaves of the plant without damaging the cactus itself, so every 6-8 months they will a new harvest.
They do not use an irrigation system for the cactus, it grows with rain water and the earth minerals which are rich in Zacatecas and great for the variety of cactus that they plant.
After cutting the mature leaves, they dry them under the sun for three days until achieving the exact humidity levels that they seek. So, there is no additional energy used during the drying process. Then they process the organic raw material to make it part of their patented formula whose composition is unfortunately not communicated.

ABAG’s little brother, the BABY ABAG was born in 2017, with a handle.

Made in a very limited edition each month, by a Portuguese family’s workshop, this classic piece is entirely moulded by hand through a process involving a piece of leather (or not) pressed against a wooden structure. With the help of a magnetic system, the case-shaped bag smoothly closes in one slick gesture.

A square molded handbag made of organic cactus leather, with a handle and one adjustable strap in organic cactus leather. Interior flat pocket in organic cactus leather. The bag is fully cotton lined.

    made of
what is ORGANIC CACTUS® material ?

The organic cactus leather is a material extracted from family plant Opuntia ficus-indica (cactus and prickly pear), cultivated in Mexico. Organic cactus is fully cotton and polyester lined in order to keep its strength and its durability. This innovative material is treated without any toxic chemical products, phthalates and PVC.

innovation developed in a responsible way

The young Mexican company DESSERTO is specialized in the manufacture of organic cactus fake leather and the very first organic imitation/faux/synthetic leather was created in 2019. Cactus are cultivated in an organic ranch in Mexico City. They are growing up thanks to rainwater and earth minerals so they are naturally irrigated. Mature ones are cut each 8 months, without damaging the cactus itself. The selected cactus is very resilient and strong, it can handle low temperatures during winter without dying and its thorns are very small so it’s easier and safer for the agriculture team to harvest.
In a second step, leaves are dried under the sun for 3 days in order to reach the perfect humidity level. The ranch does not use herbicides or pesticides.  Parts of cactus that are not used in the manufacture of organic leather are sold locally in the food industry.

top 10 of sustainable facts of Desserto’s organic cactus feedstock
    1. Biodiversity amelioration in the region.
    2. Reverts Land Use Change (LUC).
3.Enrichment of soil micro-flora and micro-fauna through native and typical organic cactus afforestation.
    4. Huge savings in water as no irrigation is applied.
    5. Environmental preservation as no chemicals are used like herbicides or pesticides.
    6. Cactus is left unharmed to enable repeated harvesting from the same plant.
    7. Energy savings by drying the feed-stock in a solarium.
    8. No cross-industry conflict as the byproduct is directed to the food industry in an increased value form which is more attractive, and stimulates the agricultural sector to plant more cactus.
    9. Full vision and traceability of the farm to ensure sustainable social practices.
    10. Technological enhancements at the fields.

    colors and finish

For the moment 6 colors are available, in 3 grains of texture imitation leather.

To date, about 20% of the collected cactus powder is mixed with 80% organic PU and PU (whose distribution is not communicated). They say they reach between cactus and bio PU 60% biomass.
